Capital Designs: Continuity and Change

How do you retain the past while meeting significant new contemporary demands on civic landscapes? Issues of preservation and change are explored in the planning and design of landmark projects in Washington DC, including the rehabilitation of the Lincoln Memorial landscape and Reflecting Pool, as well as the East Grounds of the US Capitol related to the new Visitor Center. How a major new mixed use development, known as The Avenue, is integrated into the historic context of Washington is also discussed.
